76s’ Tyrese Maxey Hosts Thanksgiving Event at Neubauer Fellow School

Last Saturday, November 23rd, the Tyrese Maxey Foundation, led by 76ers point guard Tyrese Maxey, hosted its third annual Holiday Turkey Giveaway  at Carver High School of Engineering and Science, home to Cohort 8 Neubauer Fellow Dr. Darryl Johnson. Principal of Carver HSES since August 2021, Dr. Johnson developed a Dual Enrollment Pathways Program to allow Carver HSES students to obtain college credit. He has also developed a STEM internship opportunity for students to gain job exposure and applied experience. These programs are just part of what makes Carver HSES a standout school. During the 2022-2023 school year, Carver HSES reported the highest 4-year graduation rates (100%) across the School District of Philadelphia and, in 2023, was recognized as one of the Best High Schools in the United States by US News & World Report.

“I serve as a school leader to support our students, teachers, families, and partners in developing school-wide systems that empower, liberate, and support ALL students in achieving these transformative outcomes,”
Cohort 8 Neubauer Fellow Dr. Darryl Johnson

Carver HSES continues to make strides as a pillar in education and in its community. As part of the Holiday Turkey Giveaway, the Tyrese Maxey Foundation provided 2,000 full Thanksgiving meals, from turkeys to healthy sides, to Philadelphia families facing food insecurity. The foundation received key assistance from volunteers, the local community, and other partners, including DTLR, the Philadelphia 76ers, Campbell’s, Pure Fuel, and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. The event alleviates the financial burden of Thanksgiving for struggling Philadelphia families. What an amazing impact to see at a Neubauer Fellow school!
