Kelly Espinosa

Principal, Fanny Jackson Coppin School
School District of Philadelphia
2020 Neubauer Fellow

“Being an educator is a special profession – our students make just as much of an impact on us as we do on them. Seeing the excitement in their eyes, the progress they make, and the young leaders they become is a rewarding experience that continually motivates me to expand my professional learning. I am excited to continue my professional growth in the Neubauer Fellowship and apply my learning in my role as the proud principal of Jackson School.”

Kelly has served as the principal of Fanny Jackson Coppin School since 2017. Under her leadership, Jackson Coppin engaged nearly 1,000 stakeholders to become the first School District of Philadelphia school to change their school name. Through proactive climate initiatives including PBIS and Relationships First, Jackson Coppin reduced the serious incident rate by 1.8%, increased the number of students attending 95% days or more by 19.4%, and decreased out-of-school suspensions by 4.4%. Additionally, Jackson Coppin has achieved a 17.1% increase in proficient/advanced English Language Arts (ELA) Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) scores, a 23.7% increase in proficient/advanced Math PSSA scores and an 37.6% increase in proficient/advanced Science PSSA scores. As of 2023, Jackson Coppin School reduced the number of students scoring below basic in math pre-pandemic to post-pandemic by 16.1%, more than any elementary school in the district.

Kelly has been an educator since 2010.  Before becoming a principal, Kelly served as a teacher and instructional coach.  Kelly was also a curriculum writer supporting the opening of  Executive Education Academy Charter School.  Kelly grew up in Silverdale, PA.
