Middle Years Alternative School Helps Students Achieve Greatness
Middle Years Alternative School (MYA), led by Shakae Dupre-Campbell (2017 Neubauer Fellow) since 2014, has shown improvement on almost every measure under Shakae’s leadership. Recognition includes the Outstanding School Climate Award in 2017-18, the Consecutive School Progress Award for four (2018-19) years of consecutive School Progress Report (SPR) growth, and the Title 1 Distinguished Schools Award from the Pennsylvania Department of Education (2019-20).
Shakae leads with very high expectations for students, staff and herself. The work at MYA is supported with a coaching framework that focuses on teacher action, expanded academic enrichment offerings and a partnership with the University of Pennsylvania Talent Search program. MYA’s partnerships bring students to college campuses and inside college classrooms. The school also consistently works to develop student character utilizing a Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS). Staff look for opportunities to recognize students making good choices, awarding Caught You Being Good cards that students can keep for rewards or give away to fellow students when situations warrant.
